PROJECT SUMMARY

Conversion of a redundant dairy unit into a secure warehouse and yard facility.

BACKGROUND

Mr Graham is a former dairy farmer who ceased milking cows due to the investment which would have been required for the business to comply with the Nitrates Directive and slurry storage.  John still keeps some drystock and rears heifers but the dairy unit, which includes a parlour, collecting yard, silos and cubicle housing, is now redundant.  Rather than let it fall into disrepair, John identified a need for secure warehousing and storage in the local area and while he intends to continue farming drystock, he sought to subsidise his income through revenue generated from secure storage on his farm.

ACTIVITIES

John wanted to convert the redundant dairy unit into a secure warehouse and yard facility, covering approximately 35,000 sq feet, for use by local groupage and distribution firms.  The facility is manned on a full time basis with a storeman, responsible for all goods being deposited and removed, and it is secured with roller doors, alarm systems, cctv and electronic gates.
Items funded under Axis 3 through North East Region include:

  • Site works,
  • concreting of yard and warehouse floor,
  • roller doors,
  • electric wiring and lighting,
  • security system
  • Office construction.
