The sympathetically restored Cockle Row cottages on Groomsport seafront are a tourist must-visit in Down. Their surrounding environment, however, lacked curb appeal. The amenities were out of date and inadequate, with large ‘grey’ areas and unattractive settings. Down Rural Area Partnership provided funding to redevelop and improve the physical appearance of the area.

ACTIVITIES

Funding from DRAP allowed the applicant to improve car-parking facilities around Cockle Row Cottages, carrying out construction work on the site, pedestrian walkways and the enclosed play area.

PROJECT SUMMARY

The aim of this project was to enhance the area around the Glen and Mill Dam through improved amenities which will be used by both visitors and local.

BACKGROUND

Crawfordsburn needed to improve the village infrastructure and visitor offering. In particular they were eager to improve the park area of the Glen, enhancing pathways along the stream to be accessible to parents with buggies and wheelchair users,and updating the children’s play area.

ACTIVITIES

Funding from DRAP allowed the applicant to carry out improvements to play facilities, landscaping the area, works to paths and fencing and provision of benches and signs.

ACTIVITIES

Funding from DRAP enabled project oversaw the removal of unsightly walls and the installation of railings and tactile pavement. It also developed child-friendly and disabled access to the picnic area, along with adding modern bench seating for visitors.

Capital works project to enhance the tourist facility in Groomsport Village in the surrounds of Cockle Row Cottages and the adjoining picnic area in Groomsport Village

BACKGROUND

Cockle Row Cottages are located in the village of Groomsport, two miles north east of Bangor. Groomsport was originally a small fishing village. Cockle Cottages are Grade 1 listed being first established in the 1600s and sympathetically refurbished in the latter part of the 1990s to reflect its original state. The rural seafront area of Groomsport has long been in need of upgrading and improvement work. However, due to restricted budgets it has suffered from a lack of investment with all but essential maintenance possible.

ACTIVITIES

Funding will be used for enhancement works including removal and disposal of brick walls, installation of double handrail on all stepped areas, tactile flagstones on steps, grading of banks. Removal of redundant stone features and flagstones. Installation of a decorative brick feature. Supply, laying and rolling of bitumen macadam surface.

BENEFITS

The enhancement of the area around Cockle Cottages through improved amenities to attract both the local community and the tourist.

BACKGROUND

Currently Groomsport village does not have a village plan. The project is to undertake a Village Plan for the Village of Groomsport and the surrounding area. It will be driven forward by North Down Borough Council, in partnership with Groomsport Village Association and Groomsport Parish Church, who are anxious to develop a strategic Village Plan that incorporates the views and thoughts of the entire community and relevant stakeholders, through an extensive consultation process.

ACTIVITIES

The funding will be used to appoint a consultant to undertake the Groomsport Village Plan.

The Village Plan will incorporate the views and thoughts of the Groomsport community to identify an overall vision and make practical recommendations aimed at improving the lives of everyone who lives there.
