Project involves the purchase of a Pezzolato saw TLA 10, a splitter for kindling (handling timber up to 12” thick), a bag sealer and a wood burner (for the kilns). Also a marketing and training programme.
Applicant has built up this family business alongside a suckler cow and sheep enterprise over the past 15 years and the company is now the biggest producer of kiln dried kindling in the UK. 9 workers are currently employed (some of these are part-time). Raw materials (deadwood) are sourced from forestry service in NI and in ROI and from Scottish Woodland. Outputs are 350,000 bags per annum to CPL in England (past 11 years contract) and 150,000 bags per annum to other supplier outlets such as Fuel Express in England. There is a huge demand for greater production for the English market and in ROI and a contract has just been signed with CPL for 500,000 bags per annum plus it is expected that the production for the other suppliers will be doubled to 300,000 bags per annum.
The project involved the funding of a new saw, bag sealer, wood burner, kiln radiators, marketing training and a loading/unloading bay.
The project will provide various benefits including the diversification of the current farm activities, job creation, meeting an identified need, value for money, innovation and consequential benefits to the wider rural economy.
