To provide a series of mapped farm walks on land surrounding the applicant’s self-catering cottage business, enabling visitors to view wildlife in its natural surroundings. To enhance facilities available by constructing a dog exercise area to complement the existing dog kennels.


Barnwell Cottages is a 5 star self catering accommodation business comprising 7 restored rural country cottages situated on farmed land in the heart of the Ards Peninsula. The cottages provide up to 6 complimentary dog kennels. The proprietors, Michael and Vi Calvart established the business in 2001 and were recipients of the Nature of Farming Award (2009) giving the business nationwide publicity.


Funding award used to purchase labour, materials, erect and supply gates, styles and a display platform, a bridge and dog exercise area, a bird hide & badger hide with fencing and seats. Funding also financed marketing associated with the structured walks as part of a complete package to include the self catering cottages.
