Toome village benefitted from the Programme to carry out works to overhaul its Main Street, involving a virtual reality windows scheme. This has revived the look of the street scene with a few famous faces, including champion jockey Tony McCoy and Ireland rugby International Willie John McBride at the local butcher’s and Michael, John and Eugene Laverty in a tea shop.

The village of Toome has enjoyed a makeover to create a vibrant impression for visitors, investors and the community.

TIDAL’s approach aims to keep units available for potential new uses and, in the meantime, also contributes to a bright, attractive streetscape, with colourful designs featuring a range of different types of shops attached to the fronts of units which can be removed and reused as required. They also promote ideas of how a derelict unit could be used, to inspire and attract potential new business investment. The new garden at Toome House has also brightened up the village, providing a focal point for the community and a notice board to keep locals up-to-date on what’s happening in the area and how they can get involved.

TIDAL spokesperson Una Johnson commented, “Not only is the area aesthetically pleasing, the initiatives have raised local morale and have attracted interest from far and wide to see the famous subjects," she went on to add,“The Village Renewal programme gives villages the opportunity to progress and improve village life whether it is through enhancements to buildings and spaces or progressing new ideas."
