The applicant came up with the concept of The Marquee Company in October 2007, after she discovered a shortfall in the market for hiring full package marquees in the Newry area, during the planning of her own wedding. The purchase of specialised marquee equipment and marketing costs to enable expansion of a current business and move into developing markets.
The company starting trading part time in 2007 however has now progressed to full time operation. The owner, Emma McKernan, spotted a gap in the marketplace and the business idea grew from a lack of local provision of quality marquees and hire businesses catering for weddings.
The business wanted to expand inline with the demand for their services. The business secured a 2 year contract to supply Narrow Water Events (based in Warrenpoint) with all the marquees and additional equipment needed to service its customers for private premier weddings, corporate events, charity balls). The business also had their own client base which they have built from nil to current sales of 35 units per year. The location of business is mainly on the clients site i.e. sports field, private residence or Narrow water Castle. Funded under Axis 3, through SOAR the new equipment is high specification to service the ‘high’ end of the market that will warrant a higher price. Examples of items funded include marquee, catering marquee, reception marquee, pagoda marquee, Flooring, dance floor, furniture and marketing activities such as upgrading literature and redesiging the website.
